Being all of six years old is an exciting age for your little one. They’ve passed their rebellious toddler years and developed into little people with their own unique personalities. Kids at this age can be at very different stages in their development. You’ll see some six-year-olds whizzing around on a bike, whereas another kid is still getting the hang of riding with training wheels.
The same is true when it comes to reading ability. Some kids at this age will be comfortable sitting down and reading on their own. Other kids may prefer to read out loud to an adult or still be at the stage where they are sounding out words.
Regardless of which stage your little one is at, the best way to get them excited about reading is to give them stories they will love and encourage them to practice! And don’t forget, little kids love to read their favourite books over and over again, so we hope mums and dads, you’ll enjoy these glorious reads as well!
Here’s our list of the best books 6 year old children:
1. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith
If you read the Three Little Pigs to your little one when they were a toddler, they’ll love this spoof version told from the wolf’s perspective. His claims that the pigs set him up to look bad, but it is really a big misunderstanding that will have you and your little one in stitches. On top of that, the story starts with the wolf baking a cake for his grandmother!
2 Shark VS Train! written by Chris Barton and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
An epic battle between two unlikely foes. This picture book shows the hilarious competitions these two engage in. From running a lemonade stand to bowling and playing table tennis, you and your little one won’t be able to keep from laughing yourselves silly from the illustrations of these games, not to mention seeing their expressions when they win or lose a competition!
3. Where the Wild Things Are – Maurice Sendak
This book shows that scary creatures can be lovable too! When the main character, little Max is sent to bed without dinner, he is furious when his mother and sets out to where the wild things are. But instead of being scared of them roaring and rolling their giant eyes, he tames them and becomes their king!
4. The Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson
Is your little one as clever as a fox? Or, like the mouse in the story, even more clever than a fox? Your little one will be impressed by the story’s main character, a clever mouse who outwits several dangerous animals simply by using his imagination to describe a terrifying creature the other animals have never heard of before. But what happens when the mouse’s imagination comes to life?
Read local!
5. Pura the Cat – Tan Soon Meng
Another great way to get your little one excited about what they are reading is by choosing books that are local. Pura the Cat is a stray who lives a peaceful life in Boat Quay until one day someone realises she is a valuable breed and catnaps her! Can her feline friends come to her rescue in time?
6. Sam, Sebbie and Di-Di-Di: At the Night Safari – David Seow
Another favourite Singapore locale for the little ones (and not-so-little ones too!). In this book, the three siblings traipse around the Night Safari and have some exciting animal encounters that your kids will dream of experiencing, like a giraffe asleep on the tram tracks! This book is part of a series starring the three siblings and their adventures around Singapore and London.
