Baby boy hears for the first time

Many deaf adults and children have benefited from Cochlear Implant procedures, enabling them to hear sounds and experience the world in a whole new light. This is a video of baby Jonathan, one of the youngest children to have had this procedure, as he experiences his first sound at 8 months old. We must say, this is definitely one of the most beautiful videos we’ve seen, because who can resist his beautiful smile?

So what happens during Cochlear Implant surgery? The surgery is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia and takes approximately one to three hours. The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear and forms a slight depression in the mastoid bone, where the internal device rests. The surgeon then creates a small hole in the cochlea and threads the electrode array of the internal device through this hole. The incision is closed so that the internal device is beneath the skin. Most patients feel well enough to return home the day of surgery.
