Baby Bonus Singapore: What You Get Now, and the $70,000 Replacing It

Baby Bonus Singapore: What You Get Now, and the $70,000 Replacing It

The Singapore Baby Bonus Scheme supports parents’ decision to have more children by helping to ease the financial costs of raising children. This article brings you all the information you need to know.

The Baby Bonus Scheme as Singapore has known it for twenty-five years is being replaced.

At the National Day Rally in August 2026, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the Baby Bonus Scheme and the Large Families Scheme will be folded into a new SG Child Support Package. Every Singapore Citizen child will now receive around $70,000 in direct financial support from birth to age 17, and for the first time, the same amount regardless of birth order.

Here’s what’s in it, when it starts, what happens to families already receiving Baby Bonus, and what you get if your baby arrives tomorrow.

What’s in the $70,000 per child

Two numbers get quoted, and both are right. Here’s which is which.

  • $62,000 is the new SG Child Support Package itself.
  • Around $70,000 is the total each child receives, once you add the $5,000 Medisave Grant for Newborns and roughly $2,500 of Edusave contributions that already existed.

The $70,000 is the headline figure, and it’s the one your family will feel. It’s what your child receives.

Component Amount When
Baby Gift $10,000 Cash, in two tranches within 12 months of birth
Child Credits $32,000 $2,000 a year, ages 1 to 16
CDA First Step Grant $5,000 On opening the Child Development Account
CDA Government co-matching up to $5,000 Extended to age 16
PSEA top-up $10,000 At age 17
SG Child Support Package up to $62,000 Birth to 17
Medisave Grant for Newborns $5,000 At birth, already in place
Edusave contributions ~$2,500 Annually across primary and secondary school
Total per child around $70,000 Birth to 17

Birth order no longer affects what you get

Under Baby Bonus, what you received depended on where your child came in the family. A third child was worth substantially more than a first.

Under the new package, every Singapore Citizen child receives the same level of support.

That’s a real shift in philosophy, and it means the biggest winners are families with one or two children, which is most families. If you looked at the old tiers and concluded the system rewarded people for having more children than you planned to, that calculation has changed.

When it starts, and what happens to your current payouts

This is the part to get right, because there’s a transition and the dates are specific.

  • 1 April 2027: the new package takes effect for new births.
  • Children born before then who are still receiving Baby Bonus Cash Gift payouts continue receiving them until 31 March 2027.
  • By 30 April 2027, those children receive a top-up to bring them to $10,000, matching the new Baby Gift.
  • The package covers all existing Singapore Citizen children born in, or turning 1 to 17 in, 2026, with benefits paid according to their age in 2026 and in the years after.

So nobody falls into a gap, and existing families aren’t left on the old, lower amount. If you have a child receiving Baby Bonus now, you don’t need to do anything about the transition, but do keep your bank details current with the scheme.

Announced measures take time to become operational detail. Fine print, application mechanics and exact payout dates will follow. Check the official channels closer to the time instead of relying on any article, including this one.

What you get if your baby is born now

Parents with their newborn baby in Singapore

Until the new package takes effect, the existing Baby Bonus Scheme applies. It has two halves: cash and the Child Development Account.

The Cash Gift

When 1st & 2nd child 3rd child and beyond
At birth $3,000 $4,000
6 months $1,500 $2,000
12 months $1,500 $2,000
18 months $1,000 $1,000
2 years to 6.5 years $400 every six months
Total $11,000 $13,000

Note how it’s structured: a large sum early, then a long tail of small payments running to your child’s sixth birthday and beyond. Handy when you’re budgeting: the bulk lands in the first 18 months.

The Child Development Account

The CDA is a separate, and often under-used, part of the scheme. It’s a bank account for your child that the government contributes to:

  • The CDA First Step Grant is deposited without you needing to save anything: $5,000 for a first or second child. Third and subsequent children born on or after 18 February 2025 receive $10,000.
  • Government co-matching then matches your own savings dollar for dollar, up to a cap that rises with birth order.

The co-matching is the part people leave on the table. Every dollar you put in is matched, up to the cap. It’s the single best return available to a Singapore parent, and a great many families never top it up at all.

CDA money isn’t cash you can spend freely. It’s for approved uses at Baby Bonus-approved institutions:

  • Childcare centres, kindergartens, special education schools and early intervention programmes
  • Medical expenses at approved healthcare institutions
  • MediShield Life premiums
  • Assistive technology
  • Childminding fees

Under the new package, CDA co-matching is extended to age 16, which is much longer than the current window.

How to sign up

  1. Join through the Baby Bonus online service, which you can reach via LifeSG. You can apply before your baby is born or after.
  2. Log in with Singpass.
  3. Have ready: your Singpass, your child’s birth certificate registration number, and the bank account you want payouts credited to.
  4. Open the CDA with one of the participating banks. The First Step Grant is deposited once it’s open, so an unopened CDA means money sitting unclaimed.
  5. Set up your own contributions to capture the co-matching. Even a standing order of a small monthly amount adds up, and it’s matched.

Two things to do today if you already have children: check your CDA is open, and check whether you’ve used your co-matching. Both are common oversights and both cost real money.

Who’s eligible

Family with young children in Singapore
  • Your child must be a Singapore Citizen.
  • Under the current Baby Bonus Scheme, parents must be lawfully married for the Cash Gift. Unwed parents have separate provisions. Check the current position, as this area has been changing.
  • The new package is stated to cover every Singapore Citizen child, so keep an eye on how eligibility is finalised.

The other measures announced

The Baby Bonus replacement came alongside several other family measures at the same rally:

  • Increased childcare leave
  • Additional HDB ballot chances for each child aged 18 or below
  • Lower fees at government-supported preschools

Around 610,000 children across 380,000 households are expected to benefit.

Common questions

Is the Baby Bonus Scheme being replaced?

Yes. Announced at the National Day Rally in August 2026, the Baby Bonus Scheme and the Large Families Scheme are being replaced by a new SG Child Support Package which gives every Singapore Citizen child around $70,000 in direct financial support from birth to age 17. It takes effect on 1 April 2027 for new births.

How much is the SG Child Support Package?

Up to $62,000 per Singapore Citizen child: a $10,000 Baby Gift paid in two tranches within 12 months of birth, $32,000 in Child Credits at $2,000 a year from ages 1 to 16, a $5,000 CDA First Step Grant, up to $5,000 in government CDA co-matching extended to age 16, and a $10,000 PSEA top-up at age 17. With existing Medisave and Edusave benefits the total is around $70,000.

What happens to my Baby Bonus payouts during the changeover?

Children born before 1 April 2027 who are still receiving Baby Bonus Cash Gift payouts continue receiving them until 31 March 2027, then receive a top-up by 30 April 2027 to bring them to $10,000, matching the new Baby Gift. Nobody falls into a gap, and existing families aren’t left on the lower amount.

Does birth order still affect how much I get?

Not under the new package. Every Singapore Citizen child will receive the same level of support regardless of birth order, which is a change from the current Baby Bonus tiering. Families with one or two children gain the most from this.

How much is the Baby Bonus Cash Gift right now?

$11,000 for a first or second child and $13,000 for a third or subsequent child, paid over about six and a half years. The bulk arrives early: $3,000 or $4,000 at birth, then instalments at 6, 12 and 18 months, followed by $400 every six months until your child is six and a half.

What can I use the Child Development Account for?

Approved uses at Baby Bonus-approved institutions: childcare centres, kindergartens, special education schools and early intervention programmes, medical expenses at approved healthcare institutions, MediShield Life premiums, assistive technology and childminding fees. It isn’t cash you can withdraw and spend freely.

What is CDA co-matching and am I missing out?

The government matches your own savings into your child’s CDA dollar for dollar, up to a cap. Many families never top up their CDA at all and so never claim it. It’s the best return available to most Singapore parents. Check whether your CDA is open and whether you’ve used your co-matching, because both are common and costly oversights.

When does the new package start?

1 April 2027 for new births. The package also covers existing Singapore Citizen children born in, or turning 1 to 17 in, 2026, with benefits paid according to their age in 2026 and in subsequent years.

What to do now

  1. If you’re expecting: join Baby Bonus and open the CDA. The current scheme still applies, and the transition protects you.
  2. If you already have children: check the CDA is open and check your co-matching. That’s free money a lot of families never collect.
  3. Keep your bank details current with the scheme so the transition top-up reaches you.
  4. Watch for implementation details closer to April 2027.
