Let’s face it – we mummies are busy, busy people! We wake up bright and early in the morning, get the kids ready for school and then it’s either off to work or working at home juggling household chores, before rushing to pick the little ones up from school.
With all the mad rushing around we do every day, most mummies struggle to keep their hair looking good. Most of us resort to keeping our hair in place (and out of the way) with the twist band, but did you know that keeping a healthy shine is really quite simple?
Here’s how. These are 5 fuss-free ways for mums to keep bad hair days out of our busy lives.
1. Make time for a haircut
No matter how busy your days can get, mummies should set some quality ‘me’ time once in a while. But before you hit the stores for some retail therapy with your valuable free time, it may be a better idea to make an appointment at your favourite salon for a haircut.
According to Mervin Wee, Creative Director of Jean Yip Group, our hair grows about 1 to 1.5cm every 4 to 5 weeks. So, it is best to go in for a haircut every other month at the very least. Although mummies with long hair can get away with a haircut every few months to half a year, Mervin recommends that they too make it a habit to have their hair trimmed regularly. “When you keep your hair long, the ends of your hair are the most malnourished. So it is best to go for a trim to keep your hair looking healthy.”
2. Choose an ‘easy hairstyle’
Mervin notes that the choice of hairstyle is a very individual thing and while mums shouldn’t be discouraged from being adventurous with their cuts, do keep manageability in mind when making your selection.
Before the cut, spend some time talking with your hairstylist about achieving the look that you have in mind. Let him know that you have limited time for daily styling and so the cut should be easy to maintain. Do leave room for your stylist to adjust your chosen cut to complement your face and bring out your features.
Feeling inspired to try something new? We asked Mervin for the top cuts trendy mums in Singapore are going for this year. According to Mervin, these are the hot styles you should be asking for:
– Bobs that fall below the ear lobes
– Long layered hair (So easy to tie up and go!)
– The ‘Pixie’ cut
But remember: “At the end of the day, it is important for mums to feel comfortable in their new hairstyle,” he says. So don’t just choose a cut that’s trendy, choose one that you’re comfortable with and that is easy to manage.
3. Go for the right hair care products
Your stylist may recommend hair care products that you can use at home to maintain the condition of your hair. Did you know that the Jean Yip Group is the only salon chain in Singapore which customises the formulation of the shampoo and hair masks in-house? All these are made to suit the needs of Asian hair, and works to protect your hair from the harsh effects of chemical treatment such as colouring, perming and rebonding.
When it comes to chemical hair treatments at Jean Yip, the salons utilise a special technology that is gentle on the hair. Oliver Yip, Group Business Development Director at Jean Yip Group says that the main problem is that when our hair is subject to any kind of heat treatment, a certain amount of keratin (the key structural protein component of the hair) is lost. With this in mind, the research team at Jean Yip incorporated the Nano Keratin technology to their perming and rebonding treatments, to help your hair absorb the protein better – giving you that super shiny look.
4. Choose a suitable hair colour
For mummies who have to colour their hair regularly to cover their grey, a PPD-free colour dye might be best for you. PPD (also known as Para-Phenylenediamine) are petroleum-based dyes that are commonly used in hair colour pigments. When applied in large concentrations, it has been known to cause allergic reactions in some people which could result in skin and eye irritation.
Always go for a darker shade with lower hydrogen peroxide strength if you need to cover your greys. Light hair colours tend to fade more quickly, which in turn requires a colour touch-up sooner than you’d expect.
5. Manage hair loss
Hair loss is an issue for a lot of women today due to a variety of factors such as stress, poor nutrition, excessive chemical treatment and hormonal changes due to pregnancy.
Hair loss problems can be addressed with the use of the right haircare products to protect the scalp. For more serious hair loss problems, it may be a good idea to go for a customised hair loss treatment at a recognised scalp treatment centre, such as Oriental Hair Solutions.
You can visit the scalp treatment centre to find out more about the hair loss treatment options that are available, and make an appointment for a detailed scalp analysis so that a suitable treatment can be tailored to address your hair loss problem.
We hope that the 5 easy hair care tips featured above will help you keep your hair healthy and shiny. Here’s to more good hair days for all you yummy mummies!
