33 weeks pregnant mum unexpectedly gives birth while on a flight from Dubai. Royal Brunei Airlines share the story on an Instagram post.
Giving birth can never be easy. Concerning this, delivery can even more become complicated when the person and the environment are not yet prepared. Preparedness is essential for a baby’s safer delivery as well as for the health of the birth giver.
Before booking a flight, most mums ask permission from their respective doctors. In most cases, a 33 weeks pregnant mum receives a seal of approval from her doctor. However, no one can ever expect early or premature deliveries. This especially applies to the flight crew who assisted a 33-week pregnant mum in delivering her baby.

33 Weeks Pregnant Mum Delivers Baby While on Flight
Mrs Jenny Rose Josoy was in her 33-week pregnancy when she felt her contractions. She was on a Royal Brunei flight from Dubai bound to Bandar Seri Begawan.
At first, no one on the flight expected that she was in labour. The crew even thought that she only suffered from regular stomach aches. After a while, they eventually realised that she was in the process of delivering her baby.
Meanwhile, Mrs Jenny Rose Josoy showed them her health certificate, indicating that her 33-week pregnancy. This allowed her to board the plane despite her state.
A Doctor on the Same Flight Volunteered to Help
Dr Mulfi Ibrahim Alkhinjar is a doctor on the same flight as Mrs Jenny Rose Josoy. He offered his services and volunteered to help deliver the baby.
The doctor helped deliver the baby along with Cabin Service Officer Romzi bin Haju Mohamad Yusof and cabin crew Siti Nurhafizzah Metassan.
Along with this, the volunteer doctor did not fail to show his appreciation to the cabin crew team. He praised Romzi as he remained calm and organised during the delivery. Meanwhile, Siti Nurhafizzah helped comfort the mother.
They Safely Deliver the Baby
With great teamwork among the volunteer doctor and the staff, they successfully and safely delivered the baby.
The volunteer doctor says, “Only once it was all over did I realise I had just helped deliver a baby in the sky. I am honoured.”
The airline announced through Instagram that both mother and the baby are safe.
It was such amazing teamwork and experience to deliver a baby literally on air for the doctor and the crew. The crew deserves recognition for successfully assisting in delivering a healthy baby.
What Is the Baby’s Nationality After Being Born During Flight?
Have you ever wondered what the nationality would be if the baby were born on an international aircraft? Many countries across the globe provide citizenship to anybody born within their territorial airspace or waterways. In the legal concept, it is known to be “jus soli,” or “right of the soil.”

Meanwhile, other countries rely on “jus sanguinis” or “right of the blood.” It only means that the citizenship of its parents determines the citizenship of the newborn.
Furthermore, determining the baby’s nationality also depends on the aircraft’s country of origin. All these complicated matters need to be addressed by the parents. It’s up to them if they want their child to have a different or the same nationality as theirs.
The Complications of Giving Birth at 33-Week Gestation
A healthy and normal pregnancy lasts for about 280 days of 40 weeks. A baby born before 37 weeks of pregnancy is considered to be a preterm or premature baby.
Along with this, extremely preterm infants are born within 23 to 28 weeks of gestation. Meanwhile, moderately preterm infants are born between 29 to 33 weeks of pregnancy.
Premature babies born at 33 weeks are called “moderately preterm babies.” They commonly weigh 4 and 5 pounds at birth and measure almost 20 inches long.
They are getting much closer to the size of a baby born at term. However, even though they are getting bigger, keep in mind that they are still premature. They may still need to stay in the NICU for several weeks.
Premature Babies at 33 Weeks Are Almost Fully Developed
Premature babies are almost fully developed by 33 weeks. Their bones are fully formed, and their nails come to the ends of their fingertips. In boys, the testicles descend into the scrotum.

However, let us not forget the fact that experts still consider them as premature infants. The respiratory system failed to finish development during the last weeks of pregnancy.
Most doctors require premature babies at 33 weeks to undergo relatively short NICU stays. They may need help breathing for a short time.
Aside from that, the suck-swallow-breathe reflect is not well-coordinated. These babies may not be strong enough to take in enough nourishment to grow and gain weight.
