10 DIY remedies to shiny hair

29 Oct, 2012

It’s not easy keeping your hair healthy in this humid weather. It takes effort but it’s not difficult. Check out 10 ways to keep your hair shiny without the need to spend a fortune at the saloon…

1.	Stay away from hair straighteners

1. Stay away from hair straighteners

Your hair is exposed to direct heat when you style your hair with straightening irons. It dries out the moisture, making it easier to break. Straightening irons can even dry out oily hair. If you need to use the iron, apply a handful of hair serum to your hair. Always leave a gap of at least 7 days apart before your next use of the iron.
2.	Forget about hair dryers

2. Forget about hair dryers

The heat from hair dryers is no better than the straightening iron although the heat is not as direct. If you need to use a hair dryer during a rush hour, switch the hair dryer to cooling mode. It might not be as efficient as the hot air but that will save your hair from drying out.
3.	Avoid over-dyeing your hair

3. Avoid over-dyeing your hair

Hair dye and bleach could destroy your hair if used too many times. The strong chemicals will damage the hair follicle. Try to avoid the frequent use of hair dyes and bleaches. If you prefer your hair dyed and bleached, make sure you go for regular hair treatment to replace all the moisture that had been dried out. If hair gets too damaged, shaving your head will be the only solution.
4.	Beware of your environment

4. Beware of your environment

The weather is crazy in our country. The blazing sun will suck up all the moisture, leaving your hair dry and frizzy. Put on a cap or cover your hair with a scarf when you are out under the sun. Using an umbrella is the best bet.
5.	Use a good hair serum

5. Use a good hair serum

Use the right type of hair serum for your hair. Apply to your hair every time after washing. Serums will protect your hair from the weather and the heat from the sun. Invest in a saloon brand serum instead of a drugstore product for a better effect.
6.	Watch your diet

6. Watch your diet

Your diet plays a huge role in keeping your hair healthy. Eat a fair serving of berries (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries), green peas, prunes, carrots (they contain a high level of carotene) and lots of green vegetables in your daily diet to provide your hair with the nutrients it needs. Avoid fried and junk food.
7.	Water plays a huge role

7. Water plays a huge role

Just like our body; our hair needs water to avoid dehydration. Lack of water makes your hair dry, causing split ends and hair breakage. If your hair is naturally dry, you need to drink more water than you usually do in a day. Fruit juices help as well.
8.	Don’t wash your hair too often

8. Don’t wash your hair too often

Unless your scalp is an oil factory; don’t wash your hair everyday. The chlorine in tap water will dry out your hair. Pay more attention to your type of hair. If you have oily scalp, wash your hair every 2 days. If you have very dry hair, wash every 3 days, or when it’s dirty. Don’t leave your hair unwashed for too many days as well. The dirt and bacteria could do harm to your scalp and hair as well.
9.	Use the right shampoo

9. Use the right shampoo

Know your hair type and use the right kind of shampoo. Use shampoo with more natural ingredients than chemicals. The lesser the chemicals the safer it is for your hair. Invest in a saloon brand shampoo. Drugstore shampoos contain a lot of chemicals, which could harm your hair over time.
10. Conditioner

10. Conditioner

Conditioner helps make your hair soft and smooth, allowing you to comb your with ease without damaging it. Use a good brand and you can save on hair serum. Give your hair the attention it needs and get the healthy shine you deserve.
