Is getting your little ones to brush their teeth a daily battle? You’re not alone. Despite Singapore’s top-notch healthcare, nearly half of our kiddos have tooth decay by age six. Yikes!

But don’t worry – the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) is here to save the day with their brand-new, super-fun dental education program for preschoolers and their parents.

On September 16th, NUCOHS welcomed 60 excited preschoolers from The Schoolhouse Dover for a tooth-tastic adventure. These lucky little ones got to play dentist for a day, exploring real treatment rooms and dental tools. Through games and stories, they learned all about keeping those pearly whites healthy and strong.

But it’s not just for the kids – parents got in on the action too! NUCOHS experts were on hand to dish out advice on common dental woes and how to keep your child’s smile sparkling. Did you know babies should see a dentist when their first tooth pops up or by their first birthday? Neither did we!

The best part? Each child went home with their very own dental kit to kickstart their oral care journey. Talk about a goodie bag that keeps on giving!

This isn’t just a one-time thing, either. NUCOHS plans to partner with preschools for quarterly visits, helping kids build positive relationships with dentists and oral health from an early age.

So, parents, are you ready to turn tooth time into fun time? Keep an eye out for NUCOHS programs at your child’s preschool. Together, we can make cavity-free smiles the new normal in Singapore!

NUH’s Spine AI Revolutionizes Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Treatment, Cutting MRI Interpretation Time in Half

September 2024 Health Events in Singapore Showcase Game-Changing Innovations

Parents, if you’ve ever had to navigate the complexities of medical treatments, you know how stressful long waits for results can be. But there’s good news for anyone facing lumbar spinal stenosis—a condition that affects about one in 10 people and leads to uncomfortable symptoms like numbness and weakness in the legs. The National University Hospital (NUH) has just introduced a game-changing tool to ease the process: Spine AI, an in-house artificial intelligence deep learning system that drastically cuts the time it takes for radiologists to interpret MRI scans.

Since its introduction in June, Spine AI has already been trialled with over 50 patients, and the results are promising. The AI quickly identifies the narrowing of the spinal canal, which causes nerve compression that leads to pain and mobility issues. What’s even better? It categorizes the severity of the stenosis, giving doctors a faster and more accurate way to assess what treatment is needed. And with Singapore’s ageing population, this tool could not have come at a better time. As the number of lumbar MRI scans is expected to rise, Spine AI could save radiologists hundreds of hours per year, allowing them to focus on the more complex cases that require their expertise.

The Inspiration

One inspiring case is that of an 84-year-old woman who was almost entirely housebound due to the pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. Before the use of Spine AI, she struggled with everyday activities, like going to the grocery store or attending church. Thanks to the quick and precise results provided by this AI tool, her doctor was able to plan her surgery swiftly, giving her a better shot at regaining her mobility and independence.

For parents concerned about medical advancements and innovations, this development is a big deal. It’s one more step toward a healthcare system where diagnostics are faster, more accurate, and able to provide quicker relief for those in need.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you or a loved one are dealing with lower back pain, numbness, or weakness in your legs, it might be time to talk to your doctor about lumbar spinal stenosis and ask about the advancements that could speed up your diagnosis. Spine AI is already proving its worth at NUH, and as it continues to be fine-tuned, its potential to help thousands of Singaporeans grows by the day.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Ms Jane Ittogi engaged in one of the partner booth activities at the Beyond the Label Festival 2024.

In a world where mental health often gets swept under the rug, Singapore’s Beyond the Label (BTL) movement is making some serious noise – and it’s music to our ears!

This national initiative has been busy as a bee, buzzing around the island from June 2023 to April 2024. The result? A whopping 39,000 youths and their families have been touched by BTL’s efforts to squash mental health stigma. But wait, there’s more! They’ve also managed to corner 2,400 corporate bigwigs to chat about employee mental well-being. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

The secret behind this success?

The BTL Collective – a dream team of 34 partners from all walks of life, co-led by the National Council of Social Service and TOUCH Community Services. They’re like the Avengers of mental health, assembling to save the day through education, self-care resources, and community support.

And they are seeing results! The BTL FY2023 Evaluation survey shows some impressive stats:

  • 31% more people can now spot mental health conditions (no more confusing anxiety with too much coffee!)
  • 22% more folks are ready to hire and support those with mental health conditions (because everyone deserves a fair shot)
  • 15% increase in people willing to seek help (because it’s okay to not be okay)

But they’re not stopping there! The BTL Collective is storming schools with exhibitions and talks, teaching kids how to manage their emotions (because we all know how dramatic teenagers can be). They’re even training 240 youth peer supporters to spread the mental health gospel in colleges.

For the grown-ups, they’re offering workplace workshops and family resources. They’ve even made a video showcasing employers who are nailing the whole mental health support thing.

Get ready to talk about feelings, support each other, and maybe even hug a tree or two. Because with BTL leading the charge, mental health awareness is no longer beyond our reach!
