Understanding the PSLE Foundation Science Syllabus

The PSLE Foundation Science syllabus aims to evaluate students’ comprehension of basic scientific facts, concepts, and principles. It revolves around two primary areas: knowledge with understanding, and application of knowledge and process skills.

Grasping Knowledge with Understanding in PSLE Foundation Science

In this aspect, your child should demonstrate a solid understanding of scientific facts, concepts, and principles. They should be able to recall and explain these elements accurately.

Applying Knowledge and Process Skills in PSLE Foundation Science

This aspect requires your child to apply what they’ve learned to new situations. This involves interpreting information presented in different formats such as pictures, tables, and graphs. The key process skills tested include inferring, predicting, analysing, evaluating, generating possibilities, formulating hypotheses, and communicating.

The Examination Structure

Understanding the structure of the PSLE Foundation Science paper can help you guide your child in their revision strategy. The exam consists of one written paper divided into two booklets: Booklet A and Booklet B.

Navigating Booklet A of the PSLE Foundation Science 2023

Booklet A contains 18 multiple-choice questions, each carrying two marks. The questions aim to test your child’s understanding of scientific facts and principles.

Getting Through Booklet B of the PSLE Foundation Science 2023

Booklet B is divided into two segments. The first segment has 6-7 structured questions like ‘Fill in the blanks’ and ‘Matching’, with each question carrying 2-3 marks. The second segment comprises 5-6 open-ended questions worth 2-4 marks each. These questions intend to assess your child’s ability to apply their knowledge and process skills.

The total duration of the paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
