School Year To Start From 4 January 2022, School Terms And Holidays Announced

The Ministry of Education announced that next year's school year will start on 4 January. Here's what you need to know.

When does school start for next year? The Ministry of Education (MOE) just announced that the 2022 school year for all primary and secondary schools will begin from Tuesday (4 January, 2022) and will end on a Friday (18 November, 2022).

In a press release shared on Wednesday (11 August), MOE released the complete calendar for school terms and holidays in 2022.

The following school calendar 2022 will be applicable to all primary and secondary schools:

Primary And Secondary Schools

Semester I  
Term I Tuesday (4 January) to Friday (11 March)
Term II Monday (21 March) to Friday (27 May)
Semester II  
Term III Monday (27 June) to Friday (2 September)
Term IV Monday (12 September) to Friday (18 November)

The ministry also announced the 2022 school calendar for Junior College Years 1 and 2 as well as Millennia Institute Years 1, 2 and 3. Their school terms are scheduled as the following:

Junior College And Millennia Institute

  JC Year 1 & MI Year 1 MI Year 2 JC Year 2 & MI Year 3
Semester I  
Term I Monday (7 February) to Friday (11 March) Monday (10 January) to Friday (11 March)
Term II Monday (21 March) to Friday (27 May)
Semester II  
Term III Monday (27 June)  to Friday (2 September)
Term IV Monday (12 September) to Friday (25 November) Monday (12 September) to end of A-Level exams

Vacation Periods For All Schools In 2022

MOE has also announced that there will be four vacation periods for schools, junior colleges, and the Millennia Institute for 2022.

The vacation periods for primary and secondary schools are as follows:

  • Between Terms I & II: 
    Saturday (12 March) to Sunday (20 March)
  • Between Semesters I & II:
    Saturday (28 May) to Sunday (26 June)
  • Between Terms III & IV:
    Saturday (3 September) to Sunday (11 September)
  • End of the School Year:
    Saturday (19 November) to Saturday (31 December)

Junior colleges and Millennia Institute will also share the first three vacation periods as primary and secondary schools. 

But for Junior college Year 1 students along with Millennia Institute students in Years 1 and 2, their vacation period at the end of the school year will be from 26 November to 31 December. 

Meanwhile, Junior college year 2 students and Millennia Institute students in Year 3 will have their vacation period from the end of the A-level examinations to 31 December.

Public Holidays And Scheduled School Holidays In 2022

The public holidays for 2022 were also included in the announcement and they are listed by term below:

    Chinese New Year: 1 – 2 February
  • Term II
    Good Friday: 15 April
    Labour Day: 1 May
    Hari Raya Puasa: 2 May
  • Term III
    Hari Raya Haji: 9 July
    National Day: 9 August
  • Term IV
    Deepavali: 24 October
    Christmas Day: 25 December

MOE also stated that there will be scheduled school holidays for 2022 which are the following:

  • Youth Day: Sunday (3 July)
  • Day after National Day: Wednesday (10 August)
  • Teachers’ Day: Friday (2 September)
  • Children’s Day: Friday (7 October)
    (This will only be for primary schools and primary sections of full schools)
