In the heart of Singapore’s cityscape stands a world-renowned wonder—Gardens by the Bay. Once just reclaimed land at Marina Bay, it now represents Singapore’s extraordinary journey from a modest trading port to a thriving, nature-integrated metropolis.
Since its opening on 29 June 2012, this 101-hectare garden has become a defining landmark. It reflects not only Singapore’s pursuit of environmental innovation but also a cultural identity that places nature at its core.
Sustainability Meets Innovation at Gardens by the Bay
At Gardens by the Bay, nature and technology flourish together.
-
The Flower Dome, recognised as the world’s largest columnless glasshouse, houses a rotating collection of exotic plants from cool-dry climates.
-
The iconic Supertrees—ranging from 25 to 50 metres tall—function as vertical gardens. Some are fitted with photovoltaic cells to harvest solar energy, while others are integrated into the park’s cooling and water systems.
These features are not just attractions—they are functional ecological systems, showing how cities can be sustainable and self-supporting.
A Green Vision Made Reality
The garden is the result of Singapore’s visionary “City in a Garden” master plan, introduced in 2005. It was meant to soften the built environment and reconnect urban dwellers with nature.
Bay South Garden—home to the Supertrees and domes—was designed by British firm Grant Associates and opened in 2012. This was more than a landscaping feat—it was a national commitment to biophilic urbanism, the design philosophy that places nature at the heart of city planning.
Nature as National Identity
In Singapore, nature is not just preserved—it is celebrated, integrated, and made accessible. From tree-lined boulevards to green rooftops and public parks, the city’s green ethos is unmistakable.
Gardens by the Bay is not simply a tourist site. It is a cultural space, a family destination, an educational hub, and a powerful symbol of what a nation can achieve when it prioritises sustainability.
Because in Singapore, we do not just dream of a better future. We build it. Together.
