Singapore Recalls Sake Containing Red Yeast Rice

In a recent development, Singapore has recalled two sake products. These are the ones containing red yeast rice after similar products were recalled in Japan due to suspected health risks. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued this recall on Tuesday, March 26. This follows the voluntary recall of these products by their manufacturer, Takara Shuzo International, in Japan.
The affected products in Singapore include Mio Sparkling Sake Premium (Rose). They'll recall those that are in both 300ml and 750ml bottles. These products contain red yeast rice, also known as "beni koji." Furthermore, the concern arises from a series of health incidents linked to red yeast rice-based health supplements in Japan.

Health Risks Associated with Red Yeast Rice
Japanese drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical is currently investigating reports of severe health issues. This furthermore includes one reported death and numerous hospitalisations. These potentially link to their health supplement containing red yeast rice. Complaints of kidney problems have been associated with consuming these supplements. Moreover, this prompts the voluntary recall by the manufacturer.
Red yeast rice is not only utilised by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical but is also supplied to approximately 50 other firms in Japan and two in Taiwan. This widespread use has heightened concerns about the safety of products containing this ingredient.
Precautionary Measures and Recall in Singapore
As a precautionary measure, the Singapore Food Agency has directed the importer. This importer is Pan Pacific Retail Management (Singapore). It's to initiate a recall of the implicated sake products. The recall is currently underway. It targets products with specific date markings and Jancodes 2023.02 and 2023.01, with Jancodes 4904670227605 and 4904670227636.

Consumers who purchase the recalled products should not consume them. Additionally, individuals who have consumed these products and are experiencing any health issues, especially kidney-related symptoms, should seek immediate medical attention.
