Growing up with Milo
Remember the good ol’ days of enjoying the nutritious goodness of Milo when you were growing up? Mummy blogger, Mrs Kam shares some of the best memories she’s had with this yummy chocolatey drink – and how it makes for a handy drink for the kiddos!
When I was growing up, I drank MILO pretty often as it’s one of the nutritious drinks that every child loves. I guess it’s not only me, but many people grew up with MILO.
Do you still remember the MILO van? The van would come to the school or a special event (like a sport or community event) to deliver cups of yummylicious MILO that are perfectly chilled. To me, the MILO van not only brings my all-time favourite drink for that much-needed energy boost, it also brings back precious memories from my childhood!
Till today, I still get all excited whenever I see a MILO van around. Lucky for us, we got to see one a few weeks ago at the Marina Barrage! There was a charity event going on which we didn’t know of, and we happened to be at the Marina Barrage for some weekend fun with the kids: water sports, a yummy picnic and to fly some kites!

Besides being a memorable childhood drink, MILO played a very huge role when I was pregnant. You know how pregnant women are advised not to take coffee? Surprisingly enough, for a coffee lover/addict like me, I managed to ditch my morning and afternoon coffee completely in the last few years (during both pregnancies and breastfeeding). But I absolutely needed a hot drink in the morning to kick start the day, and again in the afternoon to keep me awake.
My gynae asked me to drink at least 2 cups of fresh milk per day, but I could not stand the taste of fresh milk on its own. To make things more bearable, I added 1-2 heaped spoonfuls of MILO into the warm milk. With that, I have got my hot cuppa craving satisfied, gained some energy, followed the instruction given by my gynae, and managed to stay caffeine free, all thanks to MILO.
In case you have not tried or heard of MILO (which I think is quite impossible if you live or grow up in this region), MILO is a nutritious chocolate malt beverage made from the natural goodness of malt, milk and cocoa. First sold in 1936 and locally produced in Singapore since 1984, MILO contains PROTOMALT, a unique malt extract to give you that extra energy boost. MILO also contains a combination of B Vitamins and Magnesium to aid in the release of energy from food, and it helps to build strong bones and teeth with calcium. In 2006, MILO attained the Healthier Choice status from Health Promotion Board. It has been around for more than 70 years and it’s surely a great tasting drink that is well loved by generations.
After becoming a mum, I have never doubted that I would introduce MILO to my kids. To my delight, I didn’t have to plan or go out of the way to make that happen! One fine day, Hao Re suddenly asked for a cup of MILO. That happened when he was around 3 years old. Not surprisingly, he loves the taste a lot, especially when we order a big cup of MILO dinosaur. He would happily scoop up the powder and drink up the big cup of ice MILO. He adds to his limited (as allowed by yours truly) list of drinks and he would request for a cup of MILO from time to time. So, it is a MUST to have a tin of MILO at home.

Breakfast on weekends is quite a challenge for us (on weekdays, the kids have their breakfast at the childcare centre). As a pair of working parents with 2 pre-schoolers, weekends are for us to sleep in! Seriously, we really need those extra sleeping hours.
So for their breakfast on weekends, I need to prepare something fast (so that I can sleep till the very last minute that I absolutely have to wake up, hehe!). What I would usually give is a warm cup of MILO to start their day (or sometimes fresh milk), followed by some cooked food. That way at least I don’t have to rush, as MILO can fill their tummies for a while and give them some energy to kick start the day. Then I quickly prepare some breakfast for them once I manage to pull myself away from the bed. With a nutritious drink and good breakfast, we are all ready for our weekend! I can already imagine in another years’ time when Hao Re starts primary school, when I have to prepare a proper breakfast for him every morning. MILO would definitely be taking a more prominent place in our household!
When going out, I have a habit of bringing those small 200ml packets of MILO or UHT milk in our going-out bags (the faithful crocodile bag that we have been using for the past 6 years in photo below). As much as we would plan our schedule around lunch and/or dinner at a fixed time, sometimes it is just beyond our control. So these small packets of drinks come in really handy! All we need to do is to pull them out of the bag and make a nice warm drink for the kids to stop them from being grumpy, whiny, or even temperamental. It works every time, honestly! These 200ml packets are great for picnics, park hopping and long distance car trips.
