Witness Sophie's incredible journey as she conquers the challenges of long Covid, defying odds to dance once more.

In mid-2022, the world was grappling with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and amongst its victims was 10-year-old Sophie from Singapore. A vibrant primary school pupil, Sophie’s life took a drastic turn when she contracted the virus. What ensued was a harrowing ordeal that left her unable to walk without support, casting a shadow over her passion for dancing. This is the story of Sophie’s resilience and her battle with long Covid.

The Descent into Uncertainty

Sophie’s journey began with symptoms that extended far beyond the typical manifestations of Covid-19. Headaches, double vision, and issues with balance plagued her days, robbing her of the simple joys of childhood. As her condition worsened, she found herself dependent on assistance for even the most basic tasks, forcing her to miss significant portions of her Primary 4 school year.

For her mother, Julia, witnessing her daughter’s struggle was agonising, prompting her to take a hiatus from work to care for Sophie. The uncertainty loomed large as they navigated through a maze of medical consultations, hoping for elusive answers.

Navigating the Shadows of Misdiagnosis

Amidst their quest for understanding, Julia encountered a disheartening setback when a medical professional suggested that Sophie’s symptoms were psychosomatic. The implication that her daughter’s physical ailments were merely a manifestation of mental distress was not only unhelpful but also undermined their search for tangible solutions. Regardless of the origin of Sophie’s suffering, Julia knew that they needed concrete strategies to address it. Determined to advocate for her daughter, Julia persisted, seeking clarity amidst the shadows of misdiagnosis.

A Glimmer of Hope

Finally, after enduring countless diagnostic tests and consultations, Sophie’s condition was attributed to post-acute sequelae of Covid-19, more commonly known as long Covid. Armed with this diagnosis, they embarked on a journey towards recovery. In November 2022, Sophie commenced a therapeutic regimen that included innovative virtual-reality sessions at the National University Hospital (NUH), aimed at restoring her balance.

With perseverance and resilience, Sophie gradually reclaimed her mobility, defying the odds stacked against her. By March 2023, she took her first steps unaided, marking a significant milestone in her arduous journey. Today, as she approaches her 12th birthday and enters Primary 6, Sophie stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
