Heartburn is a common pregnancy symptom and your expanding uterus can be one of the culprits. You can get relief by elevating your upper body when in bed, and adjusting your diet.

Have you ever felt a burning pain in your chest? It's the kind that makes you feel uncomfortable but not painful enough to think that you're having a heart attack. Often, it comes with a foul taste in the mouth like you were just about to barf what you ate. This is called heartburn.

Causes of heartburn

Pregnancy Top Tips 2022: All You Need to Know About Heartburn

Heartburn is one of the most common signs of acid reflux, a digestive issue characterized by food going back up the food pipe. Unfortunately, even those who look after their diet may experience heartburn. In fact, most expectant moms will encounter this during the course of their pregnancy.

So what brings about heartburn? Is there a way to steer clear of it? Here are some of the causes of heartburn during pregnancy:

  • excessive digestive juices in the stomach
  • an increase in the hormones in the body
  • expanding uterus puts pressure in the abdomen, so the stomach cannot expand properly
  • use of some medicines

It's worth noting that in no way does heartburn predict the gender of your unborn child. Some believe that experiencing a lot of heartburn is a sign you'll have a baby girl. The only way to know for sure about the gender of your little one is to get an ultrasound.

There are a lot of old wives' tales about pregnancy that some people still believe are true. Read about these pregnancy myths here.

Natural relief for heartburn

Although it's not life-threatening, heartburn can be uncomfortable. It can get in the way of your day-to-day activities especially if you're pregnant and experiencing other pregnancy symptoms. But don't fret, as there are some things you can do to get relief from heartburn.

Since the stomach acids go back up the food pipe when you get heartburn, it's a good idea to elevate your upper body when you sleep. Try using a wedge pillow or simply prop up some pillows under your head and shoulders to keep the stomach acids from going back up.

You can also work on your eating habits. Eat small frequent meals instead of full large meals thrice a day, and watch out for fatty foods that may take longer to digest. It's also a good idea to stay away from oily and fried foods.

In addition, make sure to not eat three hours before you lie down and go to bed.

What to take

We understand your concern about drinking medicines while you're pregnant. Most expectant moms would opt for natural remedies as much as possible. But did you know that there are pregnancy-safe meds you can take to relieve your heartburn?

Most antacids are effective in keeping it at bay. Of course, it's best to ask your doctor about it first before taking anything.

Read about medication and food you can take for heartburn plus some other tips on how to deal with it.

Pregnancy-safe foods to eat that can get rid of heartburn

You already know not to consume large meals and have spicy food, which can aggravate this symptom. On the flip side, here are some food items you can have to help relieve heartburn:

  • ginger ale
  • saltine crackers
  • mint gum
  • baking soda mixed in water
  • milk (for some women)

If you are having trouble keeping food down because of heartburn or acid reflux, you may consider drinking maternal milk so you can still get the nutrients you and your baby need.

When to see a doctor

Normally, heartburn is not a life-threatening medical condition and can be caused by a number of things as explained above. However, if it's making you feel a lot of discomfort and is already getting in the way of your sleep, then it may be a good time to see your doctor.

At the same time, if none of the natural remedies and medications for heartburn are working, you can schedule an appointment. Finally, if your heartburn gets worse and comes with other symptoms like high blood pressure or intense GERD, going to your doctor will be the right call.

Here's a list of the best gynaecologists in Singapore. This can guide you in your search for a good gynaecologist if you still don't have one.
