A Creative Cross-Cultural Collaboration

Earlier this month, National Gallery Singapore and Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan launched their first-ever collaboration: When Art Meets Nature. This international children’s art exhibition brings together five contemporary artists from Singapore and Taiwan, showcasing works that explore themes of nature, environment, ecology, and sustainability.
The exhibition runs from 2 July to 9 November 2025 at the Taoyuan Children’s Art Center and offers families a hands-on, sensory-driven art experience designed to inspire ecological awareness and creative thinking.
What Visitors Can Expect
Interactive, Multi-Sensory Artworks
When Art Meets Nature invites children and parents to see the natural world through the eyes of artists. Visitors can explore interactive installations, audiovisual works, and immersive environments that spark curiosity about how humans interact with the planet.
The exhibition is curated by Peng Hsiung of Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, with co-curation by Annabelle Tan, Elaine Chan, and Wang Tingting from National Gallery Singapore.
Participating artists include:
-
From Singapore: Zul Mahmod, Tan Zi Xi, Soh Ee Shaun
-
From Taiwan: Chen Po-I, Yenting Hsu
Artworks Inspired by Water
Several featured works draw inspiration from Taoyuan’s hydrological landscapes, focusing on rivers, reservoirs, and water ecosystems:
-
Zul Mahmod (Beneath Silence, a Pulse): An immersive sound installation evoking an underwater environment, inspired by local reservoirs and irrigation canals.
-
Chen Po-I (River Lab): A blend of photography and science-based learning, encouraging children to explore human impacts on river ecosystems.
-
Yenting Hsu (Where the River Runs): Combines sound, storytelling, and field research to highlight indigenous perspectives on living in harmony with nature.
Immersive Forest and Habitat Environments

Other artists transport visitors into imagined forest worlds:
-
Tan Zi Xi (The Invisible Forests): Dome-shaped spaces where children can explore colours, shapes, and biodiversity in different habitats.
-
Soh Ee Shaun (Peace Forest): A playful, tactile environment that encourages families to rest, observe, and interact with an imaginative woodland setting.
Programmes and Activities for Families
Workshops and Learning Areas
The exhibition includes a dedicated learning space co-developed by the two museums, offering hands-on activities linked to both institutions’ collections. Creative workshops will run throughout the exhibition period, encouraging children to make art while reflecting on sustainability.
Parent-Child Programmes
From July to November 2025, visitors can join:
These activities are designed to deepen family engagement with the themes of nature and ecology.
Strengthening Singapore-Taiwan Cultural Ties
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to children’s art education and sustainability. According to Lin Yung-Neng, Director of Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, the collaboration grew out of connections formed during an international forum on children’s education in 2022 and represents a relationship of trust between the two institutions.
