10 wardrobe staples for pregnant mums
There are but a lucky few who can get away with wearing their normal clothes for most of their pregnancy. For the rest of us, it's a case of bundling together a mish-mash of old and new items to make up a pregnancy wardrobe. Those which are comfortable enough, and we hope stylish enough, to see us through our nine-month journey.
With a few key pieces in your pregnancy wardrobe, getting dressed in the morning will actually become one of your favourite things to do. Dressing up your bump will be a pleasure, not a chore. Here's 10 essential items for your pregnancy wardrobe. Time to hit the shops ladies!
#1 Maternity underwear
While wearing normal underwear is completely acceptable during pregnancy, choosing the right underwear can make a huge difference. Many women prefer oversized underwear to pull up over their bump. Alternatively you can buy specialist maternity underwear which is made from a light-weight and stretchable fabric. It will sit nicely just under your bump and won't dig into the skin.
Up top, your boobs are likely to grow at least one cup size very early on in your pregnancy so it is a good idea to invest in a new bra. Go for one without an under-wire for comfort and allow for growth.
#2 Flat pumps
Trust me, when it comes to shoes. You'll find a pair and wear them till the soles start to fade. While we love to opt for flip-flops in this hot weather, you'd be better off putting those weary feet in a good pair of supportive, flat and closed toe shoes.
Make sure they have a soft in-sole and fit snug but not tight. Your feet will swell during the day so being able to easily slip them off and on is a real bonus. Choose a stylish pair - with a cute detail so you're always adding a splash of glamour to your casual outfits.
Also note that your feet will increase in size during pregnancy due to water retention in the legs. You will also be prone to falling and tripping due to changes in the centre of gravity and dynamics - another reason to buy flat pumps.
#3 Vests/T-shirt
Choose a pregnancy vest rather than a bigger size of your usual tops. They are designed to sit right over your bump and will complement your shape. Get a few and choose bright colours as well as staple black and white. You'll live in these as they'll go great with jeans and leggings for your casual looks. Don't be afraid to wear stripes but the smaller the better and black and white stripes are the most flattering.
#4 Bump jeans
Buy one pair of stretchy fabric jeans that have a soft elasticated panel covering your bump. It eliminates any uncomfortable or tight fastening from the waistband on your denims. Black is a good option as it'll match up with all those lovely new bright vests! Same goes for buying a good pair of maternity leggings. Make sure they are light-weight and thin material. Wearing denim will be too hot for you in the Singapore humidity.
#5 Wrap dress
With a growing bust, why not show it off. The wrap around style will complement your bump while accentuating your bust. The tie fastening is comfortable and airy meaning you'll stay cool and look great all at the same time. This is a great choice for an evening out or for work, depending on your job.
#6 Tunic top
For something dressier than a vest but still wearable for any occasion, go for a loose fitting tunic style top. With a nice v-neck, it will show off your bust and fit nicely over your bump. Team with a skirt or jeans and you have yourself a sexy ensemble!
#7 Long-sleeved cardigan
You may not always need it but it can get chilly inside buildings and shopping malls with the air conditioning blowing. It's good to have one with you when you are out and about so you always stay at a comfortable temperature.
#8 Stretchy yoga pants
It's a good idea to have a decent pair of work out pants which have a seamless waist fitting, so you can get exercise without feeling uncomfortable. Make sure they are lightweight too so you can keep cool.
#9 Maternity smart trousers/skirt
Many of us will keep working during pregnancy and so you'll need a smart pair of trousers (or a skirt if you prefer) that is suitable for the office. A nice boot cut style is universally flattering and will give the illusion of longer and more shapely legs.
#10 Comfy PJs
You'll be 'chilling out' a lot during your nine months of pregnancy There are days when you have energy to be out and about but others when tiredness and aches will take over. On these days lying on the sofa with your favourite book, magazine or TV show will be heaven. Get a good pair of pajamas that you can throw on at any time of day and you're set!
