10 smart tips to soothe a fussy baby

Most new parents are usually at their wits end trying to find ways to ensure their new born is comfortable enough – praying that there will be no fussy fits! Through time and experience they are usually able identify and avert a possible fussy fit. But for those who are still searching, the following are some tips to try for soothing a fussy baby!

1. Wrap your baby up

1. Wrap your baby up

Initially, you may disagree with wrapping your baby up tightly but this is very necessary. Restricting your baby's movements may seem almost cruel but knowing how tight and cozy your little one was when you were expecting may help you relax a little!


2. Rock or sway your baby

2. Rock or sway your baby

Most babies seem to calm down quite quickly when rocked or swayed gently. This motion has a significantly calming effect, even on adults. The consistency of the movement allows the baby to become comfortable enough to doze off.

Overstimulation can also cause your baby to become fussy. Sometimes it is better to simply create a quiet space where your baby gets some peace – with no distractions.


4. Take your baby for a car ride

Putting your baby in some form of (light) vibrating contraption may do the trick to soothe and calm your baby down. Bouncy infant chairs provide good "vibrating" options, while a car ride may be another option to explore.

Bored babies are usually fussy babies too. Keeping your baby happy and engaged could help keep the fussy episodes at bay.

It may sound a little strange but babies can feel some degree of suffocation when they are house-bound for too long. Getting some fresh air by walking in the park or just around the block can do wonders in calming a fussy baby.

Sometimes your baby have had enough of you and would like a change or it may even be the other way around and you need the break. Either way, it would be good to get help when your baby is about to go into a fussy mode. A change of hands and environment might just be the remedy your baby needs!

Babies respond well to skin-to-skin contact and allowing a fussy baby to lie on your bare skin could help to calm him/her quickly. The warm and familiar smell has a soothing effect on babies.

Some mothers realised that playing particular tunes/lullabies automatically calms their fussy babies. This maybe an option to try especially when your baby responds well to a particular tune.


10. Be calm and less anxious

Babies seem to be able to sense any tension in their surroundings and in their prime caregivers. This may be a contributing factor, which increases anxiety, thus causing them to be fussy. Learn to be calm and less anxious when you are caring for your baby.
