10 cancer causing foods
Cancer in everything
In the fast paced epoch that we are living in today, processed foods are the most viable and convenient way to get by. And while they are enough to sustain our daily lives, it is not arbitrary that people around us are constantly warning us against the harmful side effects of these cancer causing foods.
TrueActivist.com has compiled a list of foods so detrimental to your health and enlightened us with the reasons why these foods are cancer causing. To find out more, look through the gallery to learn a little better about 10 cancer causing foods to never eat again.
Genetically-modified organisms (GMO)
It is definitely a fact that GMO foods are cancer causing. Both GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them have been shown to cause rapid tumour growth. And yet, GMO foods are found almost everywhere and eaten without your knowing it. Conventional corn, soybean, and fruits are genetically modified, so are many of your meats. You can avoid GMOs by opting for certified organic and products that are verified as non-GMO, and local produce grown without biotechnology.
Processed meats
The bacon, lunch meats, sausages are all processed meat products that contain chemical preservatives that allow them to look fresh and appealing. Unsurprisingly, they also cause cancer because they contain sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite. Nitrates and nitrites are considered cancer causing agents and risks colon and other forms of cancer. Choose meat products without nitrates and raised on grass instead.
Microwave popcorn
Microwave popcorn may be the most favoured snack to munch on during a movie but the yellow kernels contain a toxic chemical called diacetyl that is linked to causing lung damage and cancer. On top of this, chemicals in microwave popcorn are linked to causing infertility, as well as liver, testicular and pancreatic cancers. The microwave bag linings are also "likely" to be carcinogenic, according to Dr Andrew Weil, M.D, and may contain a chemical that causes tumours.
“Diet” anything
A recent scientific review issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reported that aspartame, sucralose, saccharin and other artificial sweeteners cause a range of illnesses like birth defects and cancer.
Refined ‘white’ flours
A study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Mile Markers, and Prevention found that regular consumption of refined carbohydrates was linked to a 200 per cent increase in breast cancer among women. The excess carbohydrate content is a serious problem. But high-glycemic foods have also been shown to cause a spike in blood sugar levels in the body, which directly feeds cancer growth.
Refined sugars
Like refined flours, the rapid spike in insulin levels aids in cancer cell growth, which explains why cancer rates are on the rise these days. Fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are one such example. Cookies, cakes, pies, sodas, juices, sauces, cereals and other processed food products are laden with HFCS and other refined sugars.
Conventional apples, grapes and other fruits
Fruits are not as healthy as you think they are, especially not those that are bought from the store. Most of these fruits are contaminated with cancer-causing pesticides. Unless they are organic verified, these fruits may risk cancer.
Farmed salmon
According to Dr David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany, farmed salmon not only lacks vitamin D, it is often contaminated with carcinogenic chemicals like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), flame retardants, pesticides, and antibiotics.
Soda pop
Soda pops are full of sugar, food chemicals and colourings that acidifies the body and "feeds" the cancer cells. The caramel colouring and its derivative 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) has also been linked to causing cancer.
Hydrogenated oils
Hydrogenated oils are used mainly to preserve processed foods and keep them on the shelf as long as possible. But hydrogenated oils causes cell membranes to lose its structure and flexibility, which could then lead to cancer. Hydrogenated oils are being replaced with palm oil and other safer alternatives but trans fats are still widely used in processed foods.
