An Intimate Look at the Singapore Story
This SG60, the National Gallery Singapore presents One Man’s Love Letter to Singapore, an exhibition that offers a deeply personal perspective on the nation’s history and cultural evolution. Featuring over 90 artworks from the private collection of Singaporean art collector Mr Chong Huai Seng, the showcase reveals how art can capture the changing spirit of a place and its people.
Mr Chong began collecting art in the 1980s, focusing on works that resonated with his love for Singapore. His collection spans paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces that depict scenes from everyday life, heritage landmarks, and pivotal moments in the country’s journey.
A Collector’s Tribute to SG60
The exhibition coincides with Singapore’s 60th year of independence, making it both a celebration and a reflection. Through these works, visitors can trace themes of identity, belonging, and transformation — from kampung life and bustling hawker scenes to urban landscapes and moments of national pride.
According to the Gallery, this collection not only tells Mr Chong’s personal story but also serves as an alternative visual record of Singapore’s growth, seen through the eyes of artists who lived and worked here.
