bad breathIf you have bad breath, there are both good and bad news for you. The bad news is that since you are used to your own smells, you can never tell if you have bad breath or not. So the responsibility of making you acquainted with this fact rests with your friends, colleagues or other people which could be quite embarrassing for all concerned. The good news however, is that you don’t have to live with bad breath. It is treatable and you can in fact work towards making your breath actually smell pleasant.

Usually halitosis, or what is more commonly known as bad breath, is a temporary problem, caused by the the kind of food we eat. For instance, your breath doesn’t exactly smell like fresh blossoms after you have beer and onion rings. However, there are some people who spend their lives popping mints and brushing vigorously, without losing the bad breath because they are unable to identify the cause of their problem .

Apart from your choice of food, there are many medical conditions that may trigger foul breath. Most of these medical conditions are related to dental hygiene and periodontal care. Some of the other common causes of bad breath are gum or other periodontal diseases, untreated tooth cavities, dental appliances that do not fit your mouth properly, yeast and other bacterial infections of the mouth, excessively dry mouth, a tooth abscess and broken teeth. Now that you know what causes the problem, here’s how to get rid of bad breath.

  1. For a lot of people, how to get rid of bad breath becomes a challenge in itself. Bacteria break down the food that gets caught between the teeth, and while they are digesting the leftover food in your mouth, they end up releasing foul smelling gases, causing bad breath. To counter bad breath, make sure that your mouth is always clean. Brush properly and carefully when you wake up in the morning and also brush your teeth before you go to bed at night.
  2. Your brushing routine should not be a ten second thing. Three things are required to keep your mouth clean. First, brush your teeth properly. Then floss to pick out any leftovers from the hard to reach areas between your teeth.
  3. If your mouth is dry, bacteria begin to grow in it and therefore you have the smell. To prevent your mouth from being dry, keep yourself hydrated at all times. Drink lots of water. It is beneficial both for your oral health and your overall health.
  4. Food that tastes strong, like onions and garlic, can cause temporary halitosis. If you have planned an excellent date and have reserved a table at Flutes at the Fort or Graze, all you have to do to ruin the magic is to order a dish with an overdose of garlic. Even if you otherwise do not suffer from foul breath, garlic, onions or liver can embarrass you on such a special occasion.
  5. Your oral health is very important. To beat the growth of bacteria, use a mint flavored mouthwash twice a day. Not only will the mouthwash help you get rid of the bad breath, but will also help you keep your breath fresher for a longer period of time.
