Breast Milk May Not Really Be Best

10 jan 2010 breastfeeding Breast Milk May Not Really Be BestCampaigns slogans that say “Breast milk is best” are all over the country that it’s impossible for mothers not to feel guilty when they don’t breastfeed their babies. Due to this widespread campaign, a lot of enterprising women are selling their breast milk online for up to $1,500. Surprisingly, a lot of mothers who are unable to produce natural milk are willing to pay outrageous prices just to give their babies the best.

However, findings in a recent study tell us that formula is just as good as breast milk . Professor Carlsen of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology said that breast milk doesn’t necessarily make a baby healthy. It’s the condition of the mother during pregnancy that makes a healthy baby.

The findings of this study points to the importance of mothers taking care of themselves during pregnancy. Also, it gives a mother more freedom to decide on how to feed her baby without pressure from others or feelings of guilt.

I totally agree. This propaganda of “breast milk is the best” needs to be kept under control. A lot of new mommies are getting all stressed up because they can’t nurse their babies. All research studies have been skewed to show breast milk is good. Of course, it’s good only when the mom is healthy physically, and psychologically. I don’t think a stressed-up mom can produce milk any more nutritious than formula.

The above mentioned study was paid for by nestle A FORMULA company ! Breast is natural, the only way to feed your baby unless you are among less than 5% of the population that has a medical reason for not breastfeeding. Formula should not be an option for other people, it should be given on a prescription
basis for babies/moms with real need for it. It’s not a lifestyle choice or whats best for you. Its the only way to feed your baby and you can justify it all you want but its best.

I think this is nonsense. Breast milk definitely is best and formula should only be prescribed on a need-be basis like Jillian said. Why then do mothers produce breast milk? It is nature’s way and I strongly believe nature has its intended ways. Till now, no formula company has been able to break down breast milk to copy it entirely. (Well, I guess even if they do I still prefer to breastfeed for the bonding, etc. and because I like to do it.)

That being said I think mothers who unfortunately can’t breastfeed even though they tried shouldn’t blame themselves nor should they be made to feel any lesser as a parent.
