About Us

theAsianparent

What is TheAsianParent?

TheAsianParent is a free online community targeted at urban parents and parents-to-be, who live in Asia or are of Asian heritage.

Why TheAsianParent?

We were tired of reading and watching content from western magazines/websites, that though were interesting, were not very relevant to the Asian parenting market or our way of life.

It saddened us to find out that though Asia amounts to more than half the world’s population, our beautiful culture and needs were being ignored by the big players. You can find hundreds of thousands of postings on western baby shower parties, but hardly ten articles on Chinese baby first month celebrations or even confinement stories!

We were also fed up with the way some “local” print magazines seemed to focus on the traditional care giving aspects of parenting and solely focused on mummies. (Hello this is the 21st century, dad's do want to be part of the equation!)

Worse still most of them present procreation as a cute and cuddly experience, all pink and powder blue! (Which we all know is complete hogwash!)

So that’s why TheAsianParent. We aim to be the number one source of Asian parenting news, opinion, education, and entertainment. We offer our educated, culturally engaged Asian readers lots of articles, videos and pod casts that are not just credible and relevant but cutting edge, stylish and light-hearted. We also offer our readers a forum where they can meet like-minded parents to communicate, commiserate and celebrate the absurdity and wonder of it all.

If you stumbled upon this website while surfing, we hope you'll come back and become part of the conversation. :)

Who’s behind TheAsianParent?

Nah, we’re not some big parenting conglomerate who’s trying to market you products under a unique, funky and uber cool website guise. *grin*

We’re just a bunch of friends who are extremely interested in the parenting industry and crave to make a difference. A little about our team:

Roshni Mahtani
TheAsianParent is the brainchild of Roshni and the conception started about a year ago, when she was just a newly-wed trying to prepare for the next stage in her life; MOTHERHOOD. Unfortunately, she couldn't find many online resources devoted to Asian Parents. Having been in journalism for many years – she contacted a designer friend and www.theasianparent.com took shape...and it grew.

Roshni loves thinking, writing, sunshine happy people, brie cheese and grapes, positive energy, life, vegging on the couch watching reruns of the office, kids, magazines, more magazines, long hot bubble baths – preferably with a magazine.

Her love for magazines is helmed by the fact that she has written over a hundred articles for the following glossies: Motherhood, Juniors, Healthy Pregnancy, Baby and You, Guide to Childcare, GOLF, Teens, Frequent Traveller, Computerworld Singapore, Computerworld Malaysia, CIO Asia, Tech-a-tete and Wedding Sutra. Roshni currently resides in New York.

Thank you for your all your comments and well wishes.

We are so excited about launching this portal.

I am a friend of Melissa. When she first introduced me to this website, to be brutally honest, I was under-estimating the whole thingy.. But my shallow mental fixation took an abrupt turn after viewing it with my own four eyes (haha..!) This website deserves its utterly credits.. Worth disseminating to my acquaintances.. Keep it up girls. U guys rock!

hey babes... consider moderating auctions of new or used products from mummies to mummies (or daddies even).. as we all know, firstly they're all not cheap stuff and you'll be surprised of some things that mummies dnt even knw exists.. I think that wud add colour to yr website.

Hi, great site and resource for Asian parents like us. I work at the NLB, and we have some really wonderful programmes at the libraries every month for children. I wonder, can a link be created on this site to our programmes site, to keep all parents abreast of these programmes?

Posted by Anita on 2008-05-22 12:16:05

Can you provide a section on playgroups and activities for infants? I would like my baby to interact with more people and have a few simple outdoor actvities as well.

Hey Roshni & Zuleha,

Nice and good initiative. Appreciated your effort and information. I agree with you girls that we need more local information.

I would like to contribute as a writer. My interest is in Attachment Parenting.

Would also like to highlight a mega event that I am organising for the Ministry of Education in Singapore called MOE ExCEL Fest 2008 (www.excelfest.com) happening on 5 Jul 2008. It is an annual event showcasing innovation in our schools. There are many interesting sessions and interactive exhibits. Would it be possible to put a ebanner of the event on this website?

Posted by Zuleha H R on 2008-06-23 21:38:59

Hi Carol,

Sure :)

Can you kindly email me zuleha@theasianparent.com so that I can keep in touch with you.

Cheers
Zuleha

Wow. so entrepreneurial. You girls saw a market gap and did something abt it. Good job. Singapore needs more people like u!

01/12/08
It has been a tumultuous week. The tragic events in Mumbai and the confusions in Bangkok have overshadowed the gloom of the economic recession. Terror attacks, something Singaporeans previously could only identify with through the television and newspapers, have hit home strongly. Terrorism has claimed its first ever Singaporean victim. Ms Lo Hwei Yen, 28, was initially taken hostage at The Oberoi Trident hotel. She was later brutally shot in the abdomen and head by the militants.
